An
$100 million Ferny Grove Station upgrade is planned for mid-2010,
including rail duplication from Keperra to Ferny Grove, a third
platform, and buying the Ferny Grove Tavern for extra commuter parking.
Parking capacity will be boosted to about 1000 spaces. (There are
currently 666 parking spaces at the Ferny Grove Station.) The bus
interchange would be improved, there would be a kiss'n'ride facility,
and more bicycle storage. According to Geoff Wilson MP, the project is
the biggest investment in the northwest in the past 10 years. The whole
objective is to get more people using public transport. Completion is
planned for mid-2012.
Alert:
The proposed changes to Ferny Grove Station include purchasing and
demolishing the Ferny Grove Tavern, but not replacing it.
Question:
What proportions of commuters parking at Ferny Grove Station come from
suburbs other than The Grove (for example, Samford Valley, Bunya, Ferny
Hills, Arana Hills)?

Brisbane Transport Network Strategy Projects This
Main
Roads projects document is now released. None of the projects seem to
directly impact The Grove, but they will bring veloways much closer to
The Grove (to Everton Hills) when they are complete.
- Wish list: Better cycle access along
roads in Ferny Grove and around the Ferny Grove Railway Station.
- While some bike paths are available,
they are mainly to Upper Kedron, not Ferny Grove. Roads around
the Ferny Grove station are busy and cluttered, and not very safe for
bicycle to get through. Better access for bikes to this side of The
Grove is needed.
- Access through to Samford Village could
be improved greatly by a cycle path along the old train-line at the end
of Lanita Rd, taking bike traffic off Samford Rd.
- Access to the start of bike paths right
along Kedron Brook to the sea do not really start until around
Brookside. Getting bike paths along Kedron Brook through the golf
course area in Keperra would greatly increase the bike facility for The
Grove.
- A bikeway alongside the Ferny Grove rail
line would greatly facilitate cycling to the City.
Walking & Footpaths
- Road design
standards have recently been changed to include design
for pedestrians and cyclists in an integrated fashion when doing a
design for an interchange or road, rather than as an addendum at the
back of the standards.
- Main Roads is
also now starting to present its future transport
planning visions in a priority order which places walking first, then
cycling, trains, buses, and only then cars and freight.
- The Grove is
hilly, so knowledge about less steep paths, and access
routes is valuable.
- Where are the walking tracks and access
routes in The Grove?

- If you are an
aged person or a younger person with a disability (or
a carer of such a person) and have difficulty accessing public
transport or a private vehicle, you could be eligible for community
transport services.
- Maxi Taxis
- Both Black and White Cabs and Yellow
Cabs offer maxi taxis for groups and wheelchair accessible vehicles
to all regions in South East Queensland.
- Please note,
taxi services are not part of the TransLink network and
separate fares apply.
- Taxi Subsidy Scheme
- operated by Queenslnd Transport Public Transport Division.
- It aims to
improve the mobility of persons with severe disabilities who are
permanent residents of QLD.
- This is achieved by providing a 50%
concession on the full cost of taxi fares to eligible persons up to a
maximum subsidy of $25 per trip.
- To be eligible to participate you must
have a severe permanent or temporary disability as assessed by
Queensland Health.
- Scheme membership is approved for a maximum of 5
years, then members must apply to be reassessed.
- A temporary membership
of an initial 6-12 months may be granted to people with temporary
disabilities.
- Criteria are:
- physical disability requiring dependence on
a wheelchair for all mobility outside the home
- severe ambulatory
problem that cannot functionally be imporived and restricts walking to
an extremely limited distance
- total loss of vision or severe visual
impairment
- severe and uncontrollable epilepsy with seizures involving
loss of consciousness
- intellectual disability resulting in the need to
be accompanied by another person at all times for travel on public
transport
- or severe emotional and/or behaviour disorders with a level
of disorganisation resulting in the need to be accompanied by another
person at all times for travel on public transport.

- a Centrelink card holder, or
- a carer or minor accompanying someone who is eligible.
- A Council Cab will take you to your local shopping centre from as
little as $1.50.
- Book a Council Cab by phoning Yellow Cabs on 13 62 94 and ask for a Council Cab.

Horses
We have some

Grove designated as suitable for horse-riding.

Roads
- Responsibility
for roads in The Grove mainly falls to ?Brisbane
City Council and some very short parts to Moreton Council. What
about Samford Rd & Mt Nebo Rd? Are there any state or federal road
responsibilities? The proposed Samford Valley Sub-Arterial Bypass is in
Main Roads Department planning.
- Mt Nebo Rd, at
the southern edge of The Grove, is not currently
linked to streets in Upper Kedron, but the 'unjoined' distance is very
short (only about 1km). A substantial new bridge has now been built
across Cedar Creek, bringing this 'unjoined' section even closer. If
the join is made, it would make The Gap, Enoggera Reservoir, Brisbane
Forest Park, Bellbird Grove, Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious very close and
accessible to The Grove.
- Wish list: To join roads in The Grove
via Upper Kedron to Mt Nebo Rd.
- Western
Brisbane Transport Network Strategy Projects
- This Main
Roads projects document is now released. None of the projects seem to
directly impact The Grove, but they will bring bypass roads and
veloways much closer to The Grove (to Everton Hills) when they are
complete.
- Samford
Valley sub-arterial, Samford Valley Road
and Samford Valley Connection
- Location of corridor
Samford
Valley Sub-Arterial Bypass (proposed) this runs through the
back of Upper Kedron. The land is preserved for this bypass for some
time in the future.This corridor
runs from Samford Road, Upper Kedron through Camp Mountain and connects
to Mt Samson Road at Yugar.
- In the 1970s, significant
residential development was predicted in the Samford Valley area.
- This corridor was planned
and preserved in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a result of concern
over the ability of Samford Road to handle the growth in traffic from
this predicted development.
- Corridor preservation was
based on current planning standards for a four-lane median-divided road.
- Current status There
are no current plans for any
projects on this corridor.
- As the corridor was identified
and protected many years ago, it needs to be re-evaluated to determine
its role in the future transport network. This will be undertaken as
part of the Western Brisbane Transport Network Investigation. This
study is an investigation to determine the long-term transport needs in
the west and north west areas of Brisbane.
- Property
acquisition The state
government already owns some
of the property affected by the corridor. This property was purchased
under hardship acquisition provisions, following requests from property
owners.
