Churches and Chaplains

Many locals are regular church-goers, although The Grove has very few churches .  Home meetings are common. People meet to sing songs of praise and worship, celebrate Eucharist, to pray together, to share meals, to form close loving 'family' groups where they can help and receive help from each other, to work in the community to help where there is need and to make a contribution, to teach children (schools) and adults, visiting sick people, to share resources, to have fun together, to provide groups of people who meet regularly and know and trust each other, to give hugs, to share social activities such as women's and mother's groups, men's camping outings, parties and BBQs, Christmas and Easter celebrations, to hold fetes and craft fairs, to help people who are sick or have lost a loved one or who are in trouble financially. Chaplains in local schools provide a supportive role to students and staff with their personal concerns and needs, outside the school curriculum.

• The Grove Community Church
• Meets every Sunday morning at 9.30am at the Ralph Took Auditorium at Ferny Grove State High School.  This church is very active locally in creating community celebrations such as the annual Christmas Party at the Ferny Grove State School.
  
• St Andrew's Catholic School -liturgy roster
• Most Catholics in The Grove travel outside The Grove to St Williams in Dawson Parade, Grovely, but there are homegroups meeting in The Grove, and Mass is held at St Andrew's Catholic School. The Catholic charity organisation, Vinnies, is active locally through its Vinnies store, and through services for people in need (food, clothing, financial counselling) through its Vinnies team.

• Question: Which are the oldest homes and buildings still standing in The Grove?
• Question: Which were the first families living in The Grove, and who is still here? We still have two Pickering families living in The Grove.

• Australian Wool Shed with its famous Woolshed Ram Show and sheering, sheep dog performances, cuddly koalas, farm animals, wombats, emus, kangaroos, whip-cracking exhibitions, waterslide, country barn dances, souvenir shop, cafes and restaurants, wedding venue provided a major Brisbane tourist attraction for many years before closing in 2008 to be redeveloped as the housing development Woolshed Grove.  Over the years it brought many busloads of tourists from Japan and elsewhere to have their photos taken with koalas and be fed and entertained in true Aussie style. For some time, locals in the streets close by were allowed subsidised meals as thanks for their patience on nights when bush dances kept the valley alive with music.  Does anyone know when the Australian Wool Shed commenced business?

• Gold mining
  • Around the 1860s gold prospectors staked their claims on quartz-bearing rock in the hope of striking it rich. The mines produced only small amounts of gold and were abandoned in the 1950s.  Old mine shafts and adits are still there along the Golden Boulder track at Bellbird Grove.
• Timber was milled from the forests behind The Grove. Species logged were hoop pine, cedar, silky oak, tallowwood and ironbark. They were used for house stumps, railway sleepers, violins and hand-carved furniture.

Our local State MP, Geoff Wilson, has recently supported an increased role for on-going adult education.
